One of the most eagerly anticipated events in the Houston area has been the grand opening of the storefront for Bernie's Burger Bus in the Bellaire Triangle. It has happened, and where would this burger blogger wanted to have been on their very first day of business?! At their front door as their very first customer, of course. Okay, their first official day of business was Monday, June 30, but I was there on the Saturday before as the first customer of the day. That counts as being first, right?!
Walking into the "bus stop" themed shop, I was greeted by an abundant and jubilant team. Glancing at their menu, beaming in conversation with the staff, and talking with owner Justin Turner, I took a seat in what I hope will become "my booth", and studied the school-themed menu with burgers such as "The Principal", "The Substitute", "The Bully", "Homeroom", etc. I was sent to "The Principal" where I would encounter fresh ground Angus beef with cheese and homemade mayonnaise, ketchup, pickles, thin sliced onions, shredded lettuce (my favorite) and slow roasted garlic tomatoes served on a freshly baked challah bun.
What I noticed about "The Principal" was simply an awesome taste that began with an extremely juicy hamburger patty. Cooked perfectly to medium, with a nice pink center and cheese covering the sides of the meat, along with the sweet flavor of the bun (grilled to perfection) and Bernie's signature ketchup (homemade Worchester version), I was whisked away to a very happy place. Bernie's grand opening was, indeed, worth the wait.
Overly excited as I was, I immediately texted my burger buddy, Scott, to get his butt over to Bernie's and join me. As soon as I had left, he texted me back letting me know he was there. Of course, I turned around and headed back to be present for his first Bernie's (storefront) experience. Scott and I agree that this is on our list as one of Houston's best burgers. Add their full bar to the equation, and we look forward to more classroom time with Bernie!
