Travel Channel's Burger Land series put the spotlight on Houston with their recent visit to some local burger favorites. Host George Motz proclaimed these were the best that H-town had to offer. Mr. Motz and I have agreed 100% on other local burger spots, but would that be the case with Blake's BBQ & Burgers?
Blake's is located on the west side of town near Westheimer & Fondren, and has been destination eating for diners since 1962. Both local and national celebrities enjoy their BBQ on a regular basis, as well as their cooked to order burgers. Blake's informal setting, and friendly service makes Blake's a favorite to enjoy.
Walking up to the counter, I perused their menu and ordered my burger. The sweet lady behind the counter was full of energy, offering her favorite suggestions. I came for a burger, and that's what I ordered - Bacon Cheeseburger. This classic is a 7-oz. all-beef patty with my usual of lettuce, onion and light mayo on a toasted bun. My mouth was watering in anticipation of its arrival, along with the side order of onion rings I added.
Waiting for my burger seemed endless. While this was a Friday night, and the crowd was steady, the wait was too long for a burger. Once the burger finally arrived, I was disappointed by the appearance of what was placed on the table. The bun was impressively toasted on both sides, the burger, and the cheese was melted on the meat, the burger was flat and sloppily prepared.
First bites tell the story, and this burger left little impression from start to finish. The hamburger tasted okay, with the over-cooked seasoned meat offering a little spicy kick. Torn iceberg lettuce didn't make me happy, and the onion rings were of the frozen variety. Another diner ordered BBQ and was equally unimpressed. (Which is surprising as Blake's has won many awards from Houston's annual BBQ Cookoff.)
While Blake's food was disappointing, I guess some things just look better on TV. On the other hand, Blake himself was awesome. Friendly, talkative, and a nice guy, i would go back just for a visit. Maybe he would suggest better things from their menu that I can try.
Cheers to Eating More Burgers!
