Every so often, an anticipated burger adventure excites me with expectation. One recent excursion lived up to the hype. Pena's Dount Heaven & Grille in Pearland specializes in unique and tasty sugary delights. But, it is their extensive burger menu that impressed me the most. Recommended by a cousin, I was told the drive to Pearland would be well worth the trip. So, I made plans to visit Pena's.
Located in an end-cap of a non-descript strip center, lines of hungry folks queue up for breakfast; however, I came for lunch. With a menu of 20 burgers to choose from, to make a selection was a bit overwhelming. However, I opted to go pure ordering their Cheeseburger with bacon. I added my usual extras including lettuce, onion and light mayo. Ordering at the counter, I proceeded to my table waiting for the burger arrival. My name was called as it was brought to my table. I was handed a tray containing an impressive hamburger with a side of golden hand-cut fries.
First bite taken, and heaven came to mind. The perfectly grilled and fluffy bakery bun that adorned the burger had the right hint of sweetness, and the perfect crunchy texture. The 100% Angus beef, 10 oz., was cooked to order at medium, with a glistening charred-crust outside with a juicy middle. There was a hint of spicy pepper in the meat that did not overpower. When served, the cheese was not melted over the patty, which tells me that they placed the cheese on just prior to serving instead of melting while the patty was on the grille. (I can overlook, but recommend they start doing so.) Complimented by delicious hand-cut fries with their crispy outside and tender middle, this was a lunch that I embraced with pleasure. A savory burger and fries for less than $10 makes this both a good value and a great meal. I enjoyed Pena's so much that I went back the following week to enjoy their Rodeo Burger - 10oz. Angus beef infused with smoked brisket from Killen's BBQ. That's an entirely different blog to come soon. You, however, should not wait a week to head to Pena's.
