I recently met a former co-worker for lunch at The Counter on Washington Avenue. This was my second visit to the California burger chain launched into the public eye when Gayle King mentioned it on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2006. It has also been listed as number 15 on Alan Richman's The 20 Hamburgers You Must Eat Before You Die in GQ Magazine. These are certainly impressive credentials.
Burgers from The Counter are anti-biotic free, naturally raised Angus Beef. Using their market selection sheet, I created my burger from their list of locally sourced and sustainable Protein, Cheese, Topping, Sauce and Bun choices. Ordering my burger cooked medium, with shredded lettuce, sliced red onion, Tillamook cheddar cheese, Roasted Garlic Aioli, Applewood Smoked Bacon topped on a pretzel bun, I was ready to feast.
The server brought out my order, which I promptly cut in half. The meat was thick, with a brilliant pink center - cooked just the way I like. The inviting green lettuce, the bubbling cheddar melting over the charred patty's side, and the glistening golden brown grilled pretzel bun offered a nice glimpse of the taste to come. The thrill of the first bite was as good as the hamburger looked - delicious! All the flavors just molded into one, each complimenting the other. The beef was of high quality that came out in it's juicy flavor. This was a big hamburger that left me quite full. The side of evenly cooked sweet potato fries added a nice sugary contrast to the spices in the burger.
The sleek industrial decor of The Counter created a relaxed setting. Sitting at their actual counter, the attentive service added to a nice lunch experience. They were quick to refill our drinks without having to ask, and they were patient with us as we embarked on deciding what to order, which was no small task. I think there are more tasks for me to complete at The Counter.
Cheers to Eating More Burgers!
