To find a hamburger on the menu at a least likely place is always a pleasant surprise. If I'm being honest, I was aware there would be on one on the menu at Peli-Peli Houston Galleria's location, because a co-worker insisted I join him to try it out. The revelation they serve won was still amazing though.
With a name like Safari Burger, I was surely about to embark on an exotic burger adventure. The menu description, Certified Black Angus Frikadelle (pan-fired meatballs now popular in South Africa) and cheese served with sweet potato fries, certainly alluded to that. However, it was the taste that called me home. I am not sure what spices were used, nor am I sure I really need to know. What I did experience was one of the most original tasting hamburgers I have enjoyed in quite awhile. Juicy, tender, tasty, due to the nicely charred crust prepared to order at medium temperature - served piping hot. The homemade potato bun was fluffy and moist, not dry and flaky as some tend to be. The accompanying tasty sweet potato fries were glazed with a nice layer of spices and pepper, which presented a glistening crispy texture.
Peli-Peli presented a wonderful burger experience, taking me on a journey from the classic burger adventure. The South-African inspired decor, mixed with the owner's Jewish roots, added a nice touch to my midday meal. Cheers to eating more burgers!
