Locating a good neighborhood burger spot in Houston is not difficult. Selecting one that actually makes a good burger might not be as common a find. However, I stumbled along one this week. Petrol Station, conveniently located on a quiet Oak Forest street, has both the reputation and great burger-bragging rights. This converted 1940's era service station has been neatly outfitted with a streamlined industrial look. You can choose to eat inside, or enjoy their awesome patio seating. Offering a nice burger selection, along with one of the best craft beer menus in town, it is no wonder that this is the go-to burger choice for many local chefs. Their burgers are unique, creative, inspired, and delicious.
Petrol Station offers two Angus-beef burgers on their menu - Petrol Pub Burger and The Rancor. They also offer lamb and veggie burger options. I ordered The Rancor - 1/2lb. of Angus-beef, cheddar cheese, swiss cheese, leafy lettuce, red onion, pickles, tomato, light mayo, and a fried egg on a nicely toasted Challah bun. The meat is perfectly prepared (their automatic temperature is medium-well; I suggest ordering medium) with a nice charred crusty texture (my favorite) driving the juices to the center of the flavorful patty. The burger is "super-sized", and should be cut in half (divorced) to maintain full control of the experience. Bite after bite (burger buddies Scott & Richard concur), the taste was quite good. All burgers come with tasty hand-cut fries as a bonus.
If you live in Oak Forest, you are lucky, as you can walk over to Petrol Station anytime. However, don't let distance keep you from making Petrol Station your next burger destination. It will be worth the drive.
Cheers to Eating More Burgers!
