The Burger Doc

Austin has continually shared some of their best home-grown dining establishments with Houston.  One of their most recent transplants opened just 3 weeks ago on lower Westheimer - Doc's Motor Works. This neighborhood bar and grill has been around since 2005 serving comfort food, texas beers and signature cocktails.  But it was the burger I was aiming for, and their menu was full of many creative ones.

The hamburger I selected was their Blackened Jalapeno Cheddar Burger. Made with 100% certified Angus beef and served with hand-cut fries, my burger was topped with grilled jalapeños, grilled onions & peppers, cheddar cheese, & lettuce on a toasted wheat bun.  Reading about this burger on their menu had my mouth watering. As I am typing this blog, I am reminded how underwhelmed I was by the burger. While cooked perfectly to my temperature preference of medium, with a nice pink middle and a slightly charred crust, the burger was just overpowered by the jalapenos. In addition, I should have known to leave off the grilled (bell) peppers, as they added nothing to the burger, and took away from the overall flavor. The bun, while gently toasted, just did not fit in with the burger, with its dry feel and taste. However, the hand-cut fries were quite good.  I recommend being less creative, and order their simpler Cheeseburger, which several of my dining companions enjoyed.

The atmosphere at Doc's is fun, robust and casual. The cocktails and beverages are quite inventive and tasty. The service at Doc's is friendly and attentive, and they were extremely accommodating to our large party. While they may not have mastered the burger I was served, I will definitely give Doc's another try, and you should as well.
