One of the best kept burger secrets in Downtown Houston is an upscale choice - Vic & Anthony's Steakhouse near Minute Maid Park. With their reputation for serving phenomenal steaks, one can expect a Vic & Anthony's burger to be prepared with the same expertise. And you would not be disappointed.
Friday is the only day that V&A opens for lunch. More importantly, Friday is the only day when the chef's big bad burger–a lush mix of specially ground chuck that’s 25% fat and 75% lean–is served in the dining room rather than just in the cocktail lounge, where it’s usually available. They have two burger offerings - The Vic (Bacon Cheddar Cheeseburger), and The Anthony (Bleu Cheese Burger). My choice was The Vic. Let's take a look.
This hamburger was big - big bun, big meat, big flavor. Perfect for a Texas-sized appetite. The burger came out open face, accompanied by hand-cut fries, and a plate of condiment sauces. The meat had a nicely charred crust, perfectly pink illustrating my medium temperature preference. While one of my burger buddies commented on the bun being too thick, I savored its softness and sweet favor. The Applewood-smoked bacon provided a very stong smoky-taste and scent. While I enjoyed the nice contrast of the bacon to the spices of the seasoned patty, my same burger buddy was not a fan of the bacon's strong smoky flavor.
The Vic was juicy and flavorful. Those juices were trapped in the middle of this thick burger because of the chef's brilliant charring of the patty. The fries were presented with a crispy outside, which was the perfect match with their tender middle. The chef paid full attention in his preparation efforts, and this was matched by the equally stellar service we enjoyed.
Be sure to ask for this burger, as it is an off the menu item. You will be glad you did. To quote another of my burger buddies, this is an "off the menu win".
Cheers to Eating More Burgers!
